“The American Experiment” Named LA Press Club Finalist

HEATDRAWN Media Named Finalist at the 68th Southern California Journalism Awards

“The American Experiment” recognized in Political Commentary, National

LOS ANGELES, May 11, 2026 — HEATDRAWN Media has been named a finalist at the 68th Southern California Journalism Awards, presented by the Los Angeles Press Club. The American Experiment, written by Ethan Ward and edited by Dana Amihere, is one of five finalists in the Political Commentary, National category.

The 68th Southern California Journalism Awards drew more than 2,700 entries this cycle. Finalists were selected by the LA Press Club's judging panel, which evaluates work across print, online, broadcast, and audio categories. Winners will be announced at the awards gala on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

The other finalists in the Political Commentary, National category are Bill Blum (Truthdig), Sonali Kolhatkar (Truthout.org), Deanne Stillman (Washington Monthly), and Sharon Waxman (TheWrap).

The American Experiment, published July 4, 2025 in INHERITANCE, examines why the United States calls itself an experiment and who consented to be tested. The essay is the foundational piece of INHERITANCE, HEATDRAWN’s magazine about race, culture, money, power, and what gets passed down. INHERITANCE publishes new essays every week at whatweinherit.com.

“This recognition belongs to me and Dana Amihere, who edited the essay,” said Ethan Ward, founder and executive producer of HEATDRAWN Media. “Dana brought editorial precision and structural clarity to a piece I had been carrying for six years. I’m grateful to be named alongside reporters and commentators from Truthdig, Truthout, Washington Monthly, and TheWrap.”

The finalist recognition follows a week of recognition for HEATDRAWN. On May 5, the studio was honored with two Awards of Distinction at the 32nd Annual Communicator Awards — one for The American Experiment in editorial work, and a second for The Thread: Love of Craft Series in narrative email series. The studio’s previous LA Press Club recognition includes the SoCal Journalism Award for REPUTATION, a limited series podcast on homelessness and housing policy.
