Introducing INHERITANCE
HEATDRAWN Launches INHERITANCE, a Magazine About Race, Culture, Money, Power, and What Gets Passed Down
Award-winning journalist Ethan Ward introduces an independent magazine examining what we inherit — and what it costs to keep carrying it.
Los Angeles, CA — HEATDRAWN, an independent media studio, has launched INHERITANCE, a magazine about race, culture, money, power, and what gets passed down.
“Most of what shapes how we live isn’t something we chose,” said Ethan Ward, founding editor of INHERITANCE. “We inherited ideas about what success looks like, what safety means, who deserves what, and what’s worth sacrificing for. We inherited those things so early and so completely that most of us never thought to examine them. INHERITANCE is a magazine about what happens when you finally do.”
The magazine publishes new essays every week — reported, personal, and told from places most American publications don't write from. Each piece begins with something specific — a place, a transaction, a cultural pattern, a personal rupture — and pulls back to reveal the larger structure underneath.
Ward is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in USA Today, NPR, Slate, Fast Company, Marketplace, and PBS SoCal. He has reported on technology, housing, culture, and equity, and executive produced REPUTATION, an award-winning limited series podcast on homelessness and housing policy, recognized by the LA Press Club and the Housing Narrative Lab.
INHERITANCE publishes essays across several recurring editorial sections, including Cultural Contracts, on the social rules and expectations we absorb without realizing they're optional; Inherited Beliefs, which surfaces assumptions about race, belonging, safety, and identity; and LONGITUDE, a series told through place, in which each entry is anchored by geographic coordinates and examines what happens when inherited beliefs follow you across borders. The series currently includes entries from Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, and Dublin, with additional locations forthcoming.
The magazine also publishes photo essays, narrated editions recorded by the author, and visual field notes from reporting environments. Paid subscribers receive access to the full archive of exclusive work.
Since 2025, INHERITANCE has published more than 29 pieces, including The American Experiment, a six-years-in-the-making examination of why America calls itself an experiment and who consented to be tested; Colonial Echoes at the Checkout Counter, on what everyday transactions reveal about race, power, and who gets forgiven; Assembly Line, on what a nail salon in Vietnam revealed about labor, currency, and shifting privilege; and The Algorithm Doesn’t Owe You an Explanation, on how AI systems are normalizing decisions no one has to justify.
Every Friday, the magazine also publishes What I’ve Taken, a curated weekly roundup of the best reporting, criticism, film, books, podcasts, and ideas — all connected to race, culture, money, power, and what gets passed down.
The magazine will expand to include guest contributors in the future.
